This error shows on Axis PTZ cameras (for example P5415-E). Once the camera is installed in its position, the PTZ viewer window says “Camera error, try testing PTZ in Maintenance section”, and obviously you can’t control or properly use the camera.
The issue is related to an improper installation of the camera. PTZ cameras need to be installed in a certain start position according to manual specifications.
If installed in the wrong direction (such as upside down) then the motor cannot control panning or tilting the camera. Hence, you’ll see that error message.
To fix this issue, open up the dome PTZ camera, and check the direction of the main moving part. Let’s say, if it’s looking straight up the sky, move it back down to the normal spot as it should be.
Then go back to the PTZ viewer window and do the “try testing PTZ in Maintenance section” again. Most likely the issue will be solved.
If you perform a test on the camera, it should tell you which axis is wrong. You may get results such as Pan: error, Tilt: Ok, camera: ok. Check the Pan axis of the camera to make sure it’s positioned correctly.
Another thing you need to consider is checking the foam around the PTZ. The PTZ cameras come with foam around the main moving part intended as protection during the camera’s transportation.
Many installers forget to remove the foam after the installation and the PTZ cannot move around. Open up the camera and ensure that no foam or tape is on the camera’s internal part.
Lastly, it’s a good idea to update the firmware on the camera. Check out with the seller or the manufacturer and get the latest version of the software, update it and see if the issue persists. If you’re still not able to make it work, contact Axis technical team for support.
