How to destroy a security camera

We’re not gonna ask why you want to destroy a security camera, however we have to warn you: be careful! You may get into legal trouble. If you’re concerned about your privacy, it’s better to talk with the CCTV camera’s owner or a lawyer. Reason with them and try to work a deal. Destroying someone’s camera is not an ideal solution. If you have no other option, this article may come to help. Here we’ve listed a few realistic ways on how you can destroy or disable a security camera.

8 ways how to destroy a CCTV camera

1. Bag the camera

All you’ll need for this step is a plastic bag and some glue. Industrial grade plastic bags are thicker and almost opaque, which means it will not allow visibility. Or you just try a regular garbage bag. The efficiency of this technique lies because it doesn’t look like an attack on the camera. A security camera out of repair could be bagged, so it seems ambiguous. However, make sure you don’t cause any damage to the glass or the camera itself. Make it look non-suspicious.

2. Blind the camera with IR flashlight

The trick is to hold the LED flashlight or infrared flashlight at just the right angle for long enough for it to lose its visibility. The light needs to shine directly at the lens. If gone wrong, you stand the chance of getting covered by the footage before the trick works. Certain types of cameras may get permanently blinded by this technique.

3. Stick a tape

Another clear indication of an under repair camera is to take a tape and stick it on the lens. However, make sure you don’t make yourself visible to the lens while doing this operation. It should look like the camera merely is out of function and has not been tampered with at all.

4. Cut the cable

Nowadays a lot of security cameras are wireless, however the majority are still running on wires. If you know the point of contact of the security camera and where it is mounted, you will be able to put it out of function by merely cutting the power or the signal cable. Since these cables are not visible, it will just seem like the camera is working on the onlookers.

If the wires are visible, dangling, loose cables will make it seem like the camera is undergoing repair. This is a long-term method of getting rid of the camera since it is costly and time-consuming to fix a security camera.

5. Painting gun

This method is for when you only need to block the visibility of a camera or even multiple cameras for a relatively short period. Painting guns are super fun. Did you know they can also block the visibility of a security camera? Merely get the paint gun ready, filled with a thick, concentrated paint mixture, the point at the lens first, and shoot. Apart from some paint splattering on yourself, this technique will work.

However, it should be mentioned that this method will work only until they clean the camera’s lens. Either way, it’s a useful method if you need to take down a camera.

6. Stone the camera

This is the oldest trick in the book. Just hit the camera with some object to render it useless or to bring it completely down. Make sure of the safety of anyone passing by below. However, if you can carry this method out effectively, you can be free of the gaze of the security camera for long before and if it is installed again.

7. Change the view angle of the camera

This one works especially if the security cameras are bullet-style. You can try to forcefully rotate the camera, hence changing the view angle and protecting yourself. Some cameras are difficult to rotate, so let’s hope the original installer did a poor unprofessional job.

8. Disrupt the view

Plant a few trees on the surveillance area of the security camera or in any direction that invades your privacy. If that is too time-taking a method for you, build a fence to block its view. So, basically obstruct the view of the camera with anything you may deem viable.
