If you have a Night Owl DVR or NVR and you’ve forgotten or lost the password, there’s an easy way to reset the password. You can follow the on-screen instructions and have a master password emailed to you in a few minutes.
The method shown here works for most of the DVRs or NVRs manufactured by Night Owl, however if your recorder is too old (like more then 7 years old), then it won’t work. The recordings will not be erased by this procedure. So, follow the steps below to reset the password for your Night Owl recorder (DVR or NVR).
The Night Owl password reset procedure works for these models (not all models are listed):
- DVR-AHD10B-41, DVR-AHD10B-RS, DVR-AHD10B-81-RS-2, DVR-HDA10PB-8, DVR-BBHDA10PB-82, DVR-HDA10PB-82, DVR-BBHDA10PB-81
- DVR-HDA10PB-162, DVR-HDA10PB-161, DVR-HDA10LB-161, DVR-HDA10LB-81, DVR-HDA30B-162, NVR-IH802-8, NVR-IH802-16, NVR-IH804-16, NVR-IH808-16, NVR-IC802-8 NVR-IC802-16.
- DVR-THD15W-45, DVR-THD30B-81, DVR-THD50B-81, DVR-THD80B-82.
- DVR-X3-81, DVR-X3-8, DVR-X3-161, DVR-X3-16, DVR-XHD20W-41, DVR-XHD50B-41, DVR-XHD50B-81, DVR-XHD50B-82.

How to reset password on a Night Owl DVR / NVR
Step 1. Go to this page “Password Reset Tool for DVRs / NVRs” and create an account. Having an account allows Night Owl to send you a secure code to reset the DVR or NVR password.
Note: To create an account, your DVR or NVR must be connected to a TV/monitor, and you must be in front of the DVR/NVR. Once you’ve created an account, enter the required information such as the DVR’s timestamp (date) , Device ID, etc, then continue on the next steps shown below.
Check your email and locate the password reset Secure Code (the email is titled “Reset Password”). If you can’t find the email, make sure to check the junk/spam folder. The code is valid for 24 hours only.
Step 2. Using the DVR’s’s mouse, right-click anywhere on the current screen to access the menu bar. Click any icon on the menu bar (it doesn’t matter, just click anything on the menu bar).
Step 3. Select “Forgot Password” in the DVR / NVR Menu.
Step 4. Once you click “Forgot Pwd”, another window will show where you can type the password reset secure code acquired in the first step.
Step 5. Enter the Password Reset Code into the “Secure Code” field, then left-click the mouse just below the onscreen keyboard. Click “OK” to continue.
Note: If the Password Reset Secure Code does not work: Either the current date on the DVR / NVR or the UID / ID was incorrectly entered into the Password Reset Tool. Return to the Password Reset Tool website and start over (Step 1).
Step 6. Follow the on-screen steps to create a new password. Confirm the new password.
Step 7. Once the password reset is successful, and depending on the DVR / NVR model, it may or may not automatically reboot after the password is reset. If the device doesn’t automatically reboot, unplug the DVR / NVR power adapter from the back of the device. Wait 30 seconds and plug it back in.
Note: Return to the browser window where you originally reset your password (Step 1) and click “Yes, it worked” to confirm the password reset was successful and to receive instructions on adding the DVR/ NVR to the app.
