Ring Alarm system allows the owners to use a four-digit security code to access, manage and customize the system. But what happens if you forget the Ring Alarm code?
If you did forget your Ring alarm code, you can reset it using the Ring app on the smartphone linked to the device, or even factory default the whole system to factory settings. You need to be the owner of the system, you can’t do this if the system’s permissions are set to guest.
In this guide, we will show a few methods on how to reset a forgotten Ring alarm security code.
Methods to Reset Ring Alarm Code
Ring systems use a base unit that is linked to a smartphone from which only the owner has access to the system. The admin privileges provide the main user the control of the system, make adjustments and change the alarm codes as well.
Basically, everything and all the rest of the accounts (low-level accounts, or guests) are managed through the Ring app via phone or tablet. By design, Ring alarm systems are linked and set up on the owner’s smartphone which increases the overall security of the system.
The alarm access codes are not shown in the Ring, this means someone can’t check these codes by simply accessing the Ring app on the phone.
The first time the system is set up, the user has to create an alarm access code via the prompts on the app. If you still have admin access to the app, then you can modify or reset the alarm code.
How to change the Ring Alarm Code
If you forget your Ring alarm code, use your phone to access the Ring app where the system is linked. You should see on the app all the devices, including the one with the lost alarm code.
Follow these steps to reset your Ring alarm code:
- Open up the Ring app on the phone (or tablet) and then tap the Menu option.
- There you should see a list of Ring devices connected to the app. Make sure to select the system for which you’ve forgotten the password.
- Next, click the Setting option. This brings up the full list of the users under the system including the owner, guests, or any other shared users.
- Select the owner’s account from the list which is typically the first one.
- Once you’ve selected the account, tap the Reset Access Code option.
- The app will prompt you to enter a new four-digit access code. Ensure you remember it for future use.
- Next, enter the newly created code again. Make sure to type them correctly, otherwise, the alarm code won’t reset. If you fail in this step, you need to start over again.
- Hit Done and then save the settings. All is done.
Once all these steps are done, the old alarm code will be erased, and you should be able to use the new security code. Just make sure to remember it.
Start managing the system right away and you should be able to perform all the tasks and actions without any issues related to the alarm code.
How to change the Ring Alarm Code as a Shared User or a Guest?
Guest or shared user accounts are another features of Ring alarm systems, that allows the owner to give limited access to other users.
If the alarm code for any of these accounts is lost, only the owner who has the admin account can reset the alarm code (or modify the current code).
If you have a guest or a shared user account, then you need to ask the owner to reset the alarm code using the linked phone app.
The steps are identical to the ones shown above, but instead of selecting the admin account, the owner has to select any of the other accounts (guest, shared user) that he intended to reset. During the process, the owner has to create a new alarm code that is valid for use immediately.
How to factory reset your Ring device
If for some unknown reason you can’t reset the alarm code using the above method, then you can do a factory reset on your Ring unit. This step should be the last resort since a factory default will erase all the settings and configurations on the device.
The catch is that the owner can’t factory reset the unit solely using the app, you need to contact Ring Customer Support for assistance and they’ll guide you through the procedure.
Moreover, they should be able to factory reset the unit remotely via their monitoring system.
If you lost your Ring alarm code, you can reset it easily by using the reset option on the Ring app. The only catch is that you need to have Owner level permission to access the reset feature.
You can’t reset it if you have just a regular guest or shared user account. Another option is to call the Ring technical team and they can perform a remote reset from their servers. Keep in mind, you need to provide proof of ownership of your alarm system.
