How to configure Hikvision LPR function via NVR

Marco Albertini by Marco Albertini
in Hikvision, Technical

Hikvision Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) function is able to scan the live footage coming from the LPR camera and pull out the license plates of the cars that drive in front of it. In Vehicle Detection mode, the passed vehicle can be detected and the picture of its license plate can be captured. You can send an alarm signal to notify the surveillance center and upload the captured picture to the FTP server.

The road traffic functions on Hikvision cameras vary according to different camera models. And, Mixed-traffic Detection (detecting pedestrian, non-motor vehicle and motor vehicle) is also available for some certain cameras. In this article we will demonstrate how to do the settings for the LPR function on Hikvision equipment. In this section we will show how to do the LPR settings via the NVR. Before you start make sure the camera and the NVR is updated to the latest firmware.

Step 1. Add the LPR camera on the recorder. Go to Menu > Camera, add the camera into the NVR as follows. Type the correct username and password (of the LPR camera).

Step 2. Go to Menu > Camera > VCA > Rule Settings, choose the Lane number. You can use up to 4 lanes. Less lanes, better plate recognition from the LPR camera. Also you need to position the camera close to the car and focus it low.

Step 3. Go to VCA >Picture and VCA > Overlay Content, configure the parameter as follows. Basically here you need to enter the picture quality, picture size, overlay information etc.

Step 4. Go to VCA >Others, configure the Trigger channel/Arming Schedule and set the Linkage Action as follows. This setting will trigger the alarm and notify the surveillance center.
Step 7. Set the Record Schedule. To save and optimize the hard drive space, users need to configure the record schedule on local NVRs. Check the image below for the parameters. You can do motion or continuous recording.

How to search the LPR database?

Go to Menu > VCA Search > Plate Search, select the channel and start/stop time. Users can search the plate information stored in the local NVR. Once you search, all the cropped plates will be listed on the left side.
