In Dahua recorders (NVR or DVR) the motion detection is set by default while initially setting up your recorder. However, if motion detection is disabled, configuring motion detection is a very simple process and can be done either locally (directly via the recorder’s interface) or via the web user interface using a computer.
This guide shows how to set up the motion detection on a Dahua NVR or DVR via the local interface (directly through the recorder’s GUI).
Dahua: Setting up motion detection locally
First of all, make sure you have direct access to your Dahua NVR (or DVR) and a monitor/TV is hooked up to the recorder. A USB mouse is needed as well to navigate the interface (a wireless mouse works as well).
Step 1. Log into your NVR using your username/password and access the main menu and click on the Event tab located in the Settings menu.
Step 2. The Video Detect menu will be displayed. This is where motion detection settings are configured on your recorder.
Choose which channel you would like to configure from the Channel drop down menu and make sure the Enable checkbox is enabled.
Step 3. Region settings can be set for your device as well which can help to reduce the amount of false motion detection alerts that are caught by your camera by allowing you to set specific motion zones, adjusting the motion sensitivity and threshold for your device.
Select a motion zone (color) from the screen and use your mouse to highlight specific regions. Motion sensitivity and threshold can also be adjusted which can increase the efficiency of your motion detection.
For example, you can exclude a tree that moves in the wind and triggers the camera. If the area is in the “red zone” it means it will get triggered, if not, the motion detection for that area will be disabled.
Step 4. If you want to set up a motion detection schedule for your security system, then click on Period. A motion detection schedule will set your camera to detect motion only on specified days and times. Basically, the system will record only on certain timeframes specified by you.
By default, this will be set to record 24/7. If on a motion detection mode, the bars should be colored green.
Step 5. Click on Apply and OK in the Motion Detect menu to save all your motion detection settings to your NVR/DVR.
Once done, your Dahua security camera system will be set to record in motion detection mode. The same settings can be done via the web browser interface as well.
Dahua Motion Detection Options Explained
Record Channel: This checkbox allows you to enable the system to record video for that channel when a motion detection alarm is triggered. In the Delay field you can specify in seconds how long the delay between alarm activation and recording should be.
PTZ Activation: Allows the user to activate PTZ functionality (if a PTZ camera is connected to the system).
Delay: Allows the user to set a delay in between motion event activation.
Tour: Allows the user to enable the camera to activate a PTZ tour when a motion detection alarm is triggered.
Snapshot: Allows the user to enable the camera to take a snapshot when a motion detection alarm is triggered. This snapshot can be forwarded to an email address.
Voice Prompts: Allows the user to customize voice prompts for motion detected events.
Show Message: This checkbox allows the user to enable the system to show an on-screen message when a motion detection alarm is triggered. So, if the alarm is triggered, you’ll get a live message on the TV/monitor.
Send Email: This checkbox allows the user to enable the system to send an email when a motion detection alarm is triggered.
Buzzer: Allows the user to trigger a buzzer once a motion event is detected. When the motion is triggered, the recorder will “beep”.
Log: Allows the user to log all motion detected events that are triggered in the device.
Alarm Upload: This checkbox allows the user to enable the system to upload alarm information when a motion detection alarm is triggered.
To revert to default settings, click the Default button near the bottom left hand corner. To copy settings to another channel, click Copy near the bottom left hand corner.
To confirm settings, click the OK button. To cancel any modifications, click the Cancel button. To apply the settings, click the Apply button.
