If you forgot the password of Smart PSS, you can reset the password by deleting the config files from the software’s directory. Technically, the old password will be erased completely and, once you run the software again, it will ask you to create a new one.
Smart PSS is an all-in-one camera management software created by Dahua and is used to monitor, playback, or backup the security camera system from your computer/laptop (Windows/Mac).
Basically, you can access your Dahua camera system directly via this computer-based software (it works for OEMs as well).
The first time you install and run the software it will ask you to create a new password. Keep in mind, this is a password used by the Smart PSS only, it’s not the password of your recorder (NVR, DVR) or camera.
In this guide, we will show how to reset a forgotten or lost password for Smart PSS. As we said, this is not the password for the recorder itself, just for the software. Continue reading if you forgot the Smart PSS password.
Smart PSS Password Reset
The way to reset the Smart PSS password is by locating the configuration files and having them erased. That’s the file where the Smart PSS stores the password and other settings as well.
The procedure is the same, regardless if you are using a Windows computer or a Mac. Press Windows and R keys at the same time (Windows + R), then paste (or type) this path: C:/Users/Public/SmartPSS.
The picture below illustrates this step. Sometimes the path may be different depending on the computer, but usually, there’s where it’s located.
The next step, search for conf.xml and delete the two files that come up. You have to erase: conf and conf.xmlusersmtp (as shown in the picture below).
Once you do that, run the Smart PSS again and you’ll be prompted with a dialogue window where you can create a new password.
Keep in mind, that deleting the configuration settings will not erase any recordings from the recorder or the files saved on the computer. It will just reset (actually, erase) the current password.
If for some reason, the Smart PSS password is not reset or you can’t log in, then you can uninstall the Smart PSS altogether and have it installed again from scratch
. When you uninstall, any settings, configuration, and passwords will be erased. Additionally, you need to re-add your devices again to the software (devices such as NVR, DVR, single cameras, etc.)
Once you install the Smart PSS again (download it here), it will ask you to create a new password for the admin account.
How to modify the password of Smart PSS
If you intend to modify the current password, navigate to Configuration > User and select your user account (click the Edit icon).
Click on the password box to update your password. Next time you run the software, you’ll need to access it with the modified password. The rest of the settings will be the same (no need to re-add the devices to the Smart PSS).
