Smart plugs are incredible devices that allow the user to turn any regular device into a smart one that can be remotely turned on or off by using the smartphone.

Technically, anything that is plugged into the smart plug can be controlled remotely including items such as lamps, coffee makers, microwaves, lamps, dishwashers, etc.

Wyze Smart Plug is one of these plugs that is easy to use and super affordable for the average user. The plug needs to be connected to the local WiFi internet which allows the user to control it from the phone.

In this guide, we will show how to connect the Wyze smart plug to the WiFi, what to do if it’s failing to connect, and how to reset it.

How to Connect Wyze Smart Plug to WiFi

How to connect Wyze Smart Plug to my WiFi?

Connecting your Wyze plug to your home WiFi is easy and procedural. The steps are the same as connecting any regular smart device to your network and phone. First, you have to pair it using the phone app and then you can connect it to your WiFi.

To connect your Wyze to wifi, follow the steps below:

  • Download and install the Wyze app on your phone.
  • Launch the app and on the home page you should click on “Add Device”.
  • Select “Power & Lightning” then select the “Wyze Smart Plug” option.
  • Turn on the Bluetooth on your phone.
  • Plug your Wyze plug in an outlet, and wait for the blue status light to come on. When you see the blue light, it indicates that the plug is ready to pair.
  • The pairing is done automatically, you just have to wait.
  • Once the pairing is done, name your smart plug (for example lamp, microwave) and then tap Finish.

The app will display a prompt asking you to select the version of your smart plug. You need to check the sticker on the plug and then select the correct model on the app. Usually, you should see a key icon (which indicates Wyze Plug 2021) or a not key icon (regular Wyze Plug).

Wyze Plugs (2021 model)

If you have selected the plug with the key icon, you need to go through these steps:

  • Plug your Wyze smart plug into an outlet, the status light will flash a blue light (meaning, it’s ready to connect). Tap “Next”.
  • Select your local WiFi SSID, and type in the password. Tap “Next”.
  • It will finish connecting automatically. Once done, name your plug and hit Finish.

For older versions of Wyze smart plugs

For the older version of Wyze plugs, you need to select the icon without the key. Follow these steps to connect it to the WiFi:

  • Plugin the plug in an outlet. The status light will flash blue indicating that it is ready to pair (if you don’t see it, press and hold the power button on the plug).
  • Select your WiFi SSID, and then type in the password. Hit “Next”.
  • On the next prompt, select the Wifi option and connect.
  • The app will finish the connection automatically.
  • If the connection is successfully established, the blue light will stop flashing, and the app will prompt you to name the plug.
  • Once named, hit Finish.

Some things to consider: the Wyze smart plug and the phone (where the app is installed) need to be on the same local network. You may need to temporarily turn off the cellular data to ensure the devices are on the same network.

Why is the Wyze smart plug not connecting?

Sometimes there may be certain issues that cause the Wyze smart plug not to connect to the WiFi. There are many reasons why this issue happens such as the plug acting up, connectivity issues with your internet, weak WiFi coverage, etc.

So, first of all, ensure your internet works properly (connect the phone to the WiFi and open up some random websites). Then make sure the plug gets WiFi coverage.

If the coverage is weak, the plug will disconnect (and connect) constantly. Your WiFi coverage needs to be strong and stable. Bring the plug closer to the WiFi access point to see if the connection drops.

Other reasons why the Wyze plug fails to connect include: the device not having power, or the power has been turned off. Sometimes you may need to reboot the plug (turn it off, wait 30 seconds and then turn it on).

If all these don’t work out, you can try a factory reset of the plug and start the setup process from scratch. The next section shows how to reset a Wyze smart plug.

How to reset Wyze smart plug?

If you’re having issues with the Wyze smart plug, try to reset it and start the process from the beginning. Additionally, you will need to reset it as well if you change your home WiFi (such as SSDI name, or even password).

To perform a factory reset on the Wyze plug:

  • Press and hold the power button located at the side of the plug. You should see the light flashing blue.
  • That’s all. Re-setup the Wyze plug using the phone app.

Conclusion

Wyze smart plugs come at an affordable price and you can basically turn any device into a smart one which allows you to remotely turn them on or off.

To set it up, you need to power up the plug and then install the app on the phone. Go through the prompts on the screen, pair the plug to the app, select your WiFi name and then type in the password. If it doesn’t connect, power cycle the plug or reset it to factory settings.
